How to Use Duck.ai

Open duck.ai in any browser

Type duck.ai into your browser's address bar and press Enter. You do not need to download anything, install an extension, or create an account. The chat window loads immediately.

Choose an AI model

At the top of the chat window you will see a model selector. Free users can choose from several options:

  • Claude 4.5 Haiku — fast responses, good for everyday questions
  • GPT-5.4 nano — OpenAI's lightest model, very fast
  • GPT-5.4 mini — OpenAI's capable and quick option
  • Mistral Small 4 — a European-made open model
  • gpt-oss-120b — open-source model hosted by Tinfoil.sh, strong for explanations
  • Gemma 4 31B — open-source model hosted by Tinfoil.sh

If you are not sure where to start, Claude 4.5 Haiku or GPT-5.4 mini are solid choices for general use. Paid DuckDuckGo subscribers also get access to stronger models.

Type your question and press Enter

Just type normally — Duck.ai works like any other AI chatbot. Ask a question, read the answer, and follow up with more questions in the same conversation. There is no limit on back-and-forth within a single session.

Switch models if the answer does not satisfy you

If a response from one model feels too short or misses the point, you can switch to a different model and ask the same question again. Each model has slightly different strengths. gpt-oss-120b often gives more detailed explanations; Claude 4.5 Haiku tends to be more concise. You can switch at any point during the conversation.

Close the tab when you are done

When you are finished, you can just close the browser tab. Duck.ai keeps your recent conversations saved locally on your device by default, so you'll find them again in the sidebar next time you open it. If you'd rather nothing was kept, open Settings and turn chat history off, or use the Fire Button to clear everything at once. If you want to start a fresh conversation while the tab is still open, look for a "New Chat" button.

Who Is Duck.ai Best For?

Duck.ai is a strong fit if you:

  • Want to try AI without handing over an email address
  • Are researching something private — a health concern, a financial question, a sensitive family situation — and do not want it linked to an account
  • Have read about AI privacy and want a tool that puts those values into practice
  • Just need a quick answer to a one-off question without setting up a new service

It is less suited for tasks that need the AI to remember you between sessions, work with uploaded files or images, search the web, or do anything more than text-based conversation. For those, ChatGPT or Gemini with an account are better equipped.

What to Watch Out For

Private from the provider does not mean invisible to everyone with access to your device. By default, Duck.ai keeps your recent chats — not just your browsing history — saved locally on the device and browser profile you used. Anyone who can get to that browser, such as a family member, a housemate, or your employer if you are on a work computer, can open the sidebar and read them, the same as they could with any other saved browser data. Duck.ai shields your identity from OpenAI and Anthropic; it does not shield your conversation text from someone with physical or logged-in access to your device. If that matters to you, turn off chat history in Settings, or clear it with the Fire Button after sensitive conversations.

Local history is not the same as the AI remembering you. Duck.ai's Recent Chats let you reopen a past conversation, but the model itself does not build a profile of you across separate chats the way a logged-in assistant's memory feature can. If you want the AI to carry context from one topic into another automatically, you still need to restate it — for example, "Last time we established that I am looking for a part-time remote job in marketing, and I have ten years of experience."

Free models have real limits. Claude 4.5 Haiku and GPT-5.4 mini are capable, but they are not the most powerful models available. If you need deep analysis, long documents summarized, or nuanced writing feedback, the paid versions of ChatGPT or Claude will outperform what you get here for free.

Still read the privacy policy. DuckDuckGo's privacy commitments are public, readable, and better than most. But if you are handling genuinely sensitive information — legal, medical, or financial matters with real stakes — a conversation with an actual professional remains irreplaceable. Duck.ai can help you prepare smart questions to ask; it cannot replace the person who answers them.
