ChatGPT Can Now Show You Your Credit Score — What It Means for Your Money

News

On 21 September 2026, OpenAI rolled out a new feature inside ChatGPT called Finances: US Plus and Pro subscribers could, and from October 2, 2026 free users can too, connect their Experian credit report and see their credit score directly in a chat, on the web, on iPhone, or on Android.

What it actually does. After you connect your Experian account, ChatGPT shows your VantageScore 3.0 — a credit score on the familiar 300–850 scale — along with your score history and the factors affecting it. The report and score refresh about once a month, and ChatGPT can alert you to changes such as a new loan inquiry, a new account being opened, or an address change on file, which are also classic signs of identity theft. Checking your score this way is a "soft" inquiry, so it does not lower your score the way applying for a new credit card does.

Why it matters. Two things worth keeping in mind. First, the number ChatGPT shows you is a credit score, not the credit score — banks, landlords, and card issuers often pull a different model (a FICO score, or a score from one of the other two bureaus, Equifax or TransUnion), so the figure in ChatGPT can be higher or lower than what a lender actually sees. Second, this is the first time a mainstream AI chatbot has plugged directly into a credit bureau, which means your financial history is now something ChatGPT can read and discuss with you the same way it reads a document you paste in — worth pausing on before you connect it.

What to do with this, safely.

  • Use it to spot fraud early, not to shop for a loan. The monitoring alerts are genuinely useful — a new account or inquiry you don't recognize is worth acting on immediately.
  • Don't treat the score as final. Before applying for a mortgage or major loan, check your actual free credit reports at annualcreditreport.com, the one site the three bureaus jointly authorize for that.
  • Know you can disconnect it. The Experian connection lives in ChatGPT's Finances/connector settings and can be removed at any time, the same way you'd revoke any other connected account.
  • This feature is US-only for now, it has not (yet) rolled out to other countries. A paid plan was needed at first, but OpenAI says that from October 2, 2026 it also covers Free and Go users in the US.
