From October 9, 2026, Google is narrowing which Gemini models you can pick on a personal account. Google announced it on its own help page for the Gemini app.
What changes, by plan:
- Free: only the lightest model, called Flash-Lite. The more capable Flash and Pro models are no longer included.
- Google AI Plus (the lower-priced paid plan): you lose Pro and keep Flash-Lite and Flash. Google says AI Plus subscribers get an email explaining the date the change reaches their account.
- Google AI Pro and AI Ultra: you keep Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro.
Google's page also says each model has low, medium and high effort levels, and higher levels use up your limit faster. Google's page doesn't say why it made the change, and it describes personal accounts only.
What it means for you. If you use free Gemini, you may notice shorter or less thorough answers, especially on harder questions such as a confusing form or a long letter. That isn't a fault in the app; it's the lighter model. For anything important, such as health, money or legal paperwork, double-check the answer with an official source or a professional. Our guide to what not to tell an AI chatbot still applies.
Should you pay? Don't upgrade in a hurry. If you only subscribed to AI Plus to get Pro, that reason is gone, so check what you actually use before the next renewal. You can also compare options: free ChatGPT now offers unlimited text chats, and our free chatbots comparison and paid plans comparison cover the rest.
One safety tip. News like this attracts scammers. Only change or buy a plan inside the official Gemini app or on gemini.google.com, never through a link in an email, text or ad. Be wary of any message that pressures you to "act now" or asks for card or login details to "keep your access".
Not sure the rollout reaches you on the same day, or in your country? Google's page doesn't say, so check the help page or your own app.
