If you've been shopping for a new laptop, there's a new option on the shelf. On September 21, 2026, Google opened pre-orders for Googlebook — a new laptop category built around its Gemini AI, made together with five hardware partners: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. The five launch models run from $899 to $1,299, with shipping starting October 4, 2026, through the Google Store, Best Buy, and other retailers.
You don't need one. This is the part worth reading first: Gemini already works, for free, on the computer or phone you already own. Googlebook doesn't unlock some AI feature you're otherwise missing — it's a new choice for people who happen to be buying a brand-new laptop anyway, not a reason to replace a computer that's working fine.
What's actually new is two hardware touches. The first is called Magic Pointer: instead of copying text or taking a screenshot to ask Gemini about something on your screen, you wiggle your cursor over it and a Gemini panel opens with that content already in view. The second is Glowbar, a thin light strip on the laptop's lid that glows to show battery status and lets you know when Gemini is actively listening or responding — similar in spirit to the light some smart speakers use.
What's bundled matters more than the hardware. Every Googlebook comes with 12 months of Google AI Pro included at no extra cost — that's Google's $19.99-a-month plan (see our comparison of ChatGPT Plus, Google AI Pro, and Claude Pro), which normally runs close to $240 a year on its own. Buyers also get 3 months of YouTube Premium and 3 months of Adobe Photoshop thrown in.
Who Google is actually building this for. The "50 million" figure attached to this launch in press coverage refers to Chromebooks already in schools, used by students and teachers — not the general public. Google says those existing Chromebooks will keep being supported, but has said many will eventually be eligible to move to the Googlebook experience, which reporters read as a long-term push to bring Gemini into education. If you're buying for yourself rather than for a classroom, that detail doesn't really apply to you — what matters is the question below.
Is it worth it? Do the math on your own situation rather than the marketing pitch. If you're already planning to buy a new laptop soon and you live inside Google's world — Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive — the free year of AI Pro is real money back, especially if you'd have paid for extra Google storage anyway. If your current laptop still does what you need, there's no urgency: nothing about Gemini is being taken away from the device you already have.
