Meta Launched a Paid AI Subscription Called Meta One — Here's What's Still Free

News

If you've noticed a new "Meta One" mention popping up in Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp settings, it's not a bug and it's not a hidden fee — it's a new paid tier Meta rolled out on September 15, 2026 for people who want more out of its AI tools.

What Meta One actually is. It's a subscription that spans Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI, sold in two consumer bundles: Core at $7.99 a month and Premium at $19.99 a month. Paying gets you higher usage limits on the AI features that are otherwise capped — more image and video generation using Meta's Muse models, and more use of in-app tools like Restyle on Instagram. Premium gives you noticeably more headroom than Core. Meta says the plans are rolling out globally, though exact pricing and which features are included can vary by country and app.

What stays free. This is the part worth underlining: Meta has said directly that "the core experience across our apps and Meta AI has always been free, and that's not changing." You don't need Meta One to use Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, or to chat with Meta AI. What you're paying for is a higher ceiling on the AI-heavy extras — think of it like a free app with an optional pass for people who generate a lot of AI images or video and keep hitting a daily limit.

Who this is actually for. If you occasionally ask Meta AI a question or generate the odd photo edit, you likely won't notice a difference — you're using less than the free tier allows. Meta One mainly matters to people who create a lot of AI content regularly and keep running into "you've reached your limit" messages. There's also a separate set of business and creator plans (roughly $15 to $499 a month) built around a "Meta Business Agent" that answers customer questions and books appointments automatically — that's aimed at businesses running a Facebook or Instagram page, not at everyday personal use.

Not to be confused with Muse. Meta also launched an AI shopping agent called Muse earlier this month — see our explainer on Meta's Muse AI agent. Muse is a separate product with its own pricing (Power at $20/month, Maximum at $100/month) that browses the web and makes purchases for you. Meta One is about usage limits on AI tools already inside Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp; Muse is a shopping assistant. They're easy to mix up because both launched in September 2026, but they do different things and are billed separately.

Why this is worth pausing on. Any time a company rolls out a new paid tier, it's also a moment scammers exploit. Expect fake "Your Meta One subscription payment failed" or "confirm your Meta One billing" messages by email or text in the coming weeks — these follow the exact same pattern as fake Netflix or Apple billing alerts. Manage or check any Meta One subscription only inside the app itself (Settings → Meta One or Accounts Center), never through a link in an email or text.
