After a blood test, an X-ray, or a doctor's visit, you often get a summary full of terms like "mildly elevated," "within reference range," or "recommend follow-up" — without much explanation of what any of it actually means for you. Portals hand you the numbers; they rarely explain them in plain language.
You can fix that in two minutes. Copy the text of your lab result or after-visit summary — or take a photo of the printed page — and paste it into ChatGPT or Gemini with a prompt like this:
"Here are my lab results / after-visit summary. Explain in plain English what each term and result means, what's normal versus not, and suggest three questions I should ask my doctor about anything unclear or concerning."
You'll get a clear translation of the jargon and a short list of specific questions to bring to your next appointment — much more useful than sitting in the exam room trying to remember what you wanted to ask.
Before you paste anything: black out or delete your name, date of birth, and any account or medical record numbers first. You don't need to include them for the AI to explain the terms, and there's no reason to share them.
One important caveat: AI is good at translating medical language into everyday words and helping you prepare better questions — it is not a doctor and cannot diagnose you or tell you what to do next. Treat its explanation as a way to walk into your appointment better informed, never as a replacement for your doctor's judgment. If anything looks urgent or you feel unwell, contact your doctor or urgent care directly instead of waiting.
Two minutes of translating jargon into questions turns a confusing portal message into an appointment where you actually get answers.
