ChatGPT’s Money Feature Now Reaches Free Users in the US — What to Know Before You Connect

News

On October 2, 2026, OpenAI said that "Finances" in ChatGPT is rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States. Until now you needed a paid plan: Pro from May, Plus from late June. According to OpenAI, you no longer need a subscription. It works on the web, iPhone and Android. We couldn't find an outside news report yet, so this is OpenAI's own word.

What it does. You can connect your bank, credit card or investment accounts through a service called Plaid, which OpenAI says supports more than 12,000 institutions. You can also connect your credit report through Experian. These are two separate connections, so you can use one, both or neither. ChatGPT then shows a dashboard of your spending and lets you ask questions such as "what changed this month?"

What it can and can't see. It reads balances, transactions and investments. It doesn't get your full account numbers and it can't move money, because the connection is read-only. It is also not a financial adviser. A human adviser may have a duty to act in your interest. ChatGPT has no such duty, so treat its answers as a starting point, not as advice. ChatGPT also shows ads to Free and Go users in the US, which is a reason to think about what you share.

What changes for you. If you're in the US and on a free plan, you'll probably start seeing offers to "connect your accounts". You don't have to. Outside the US, we haven't seen any sign of it yet.

Staying safe.

  • Connect only from inside the real ChatGPT app or chatgpt.com. Don't follow a link from an email or text.
  • The real connection happens in a Plaid window. It never asks for your bank password in the chat, or for a code sent by text message to ChatGPT. If someone does, stop.
  • Be wary of apps or websites called "ChatGPT Finances" or offering to "link your bank to ChatGPT". They are a classic way to steal logins.
  • You can disconnect at any time in ChatGPT's settings, and you can review what is stored there.
